Now that summer is drawing to a close, the conference season is upon us. Traditionally, VMware’s VMworld Europe is the first one. Held in Barcelona from the 11th till the 14th of September, it’s the industry's top cloud infrastructure and digital workspace event. And I was fortunate enough to attend. VMware had already shared some very exciting stuff at VMworld Las Vegas, however, they  did have a few more tricks up their sleeve.

It’s clear that every business in every industry is starting or is in the midst of a digital transformation journey. This quote by Pat Gelsinger pretty much sums it up: “Today is the slowest day of tech evolution of the rest of your life.”

VMware’s goal is to enable organizations to be successful on the path of change by providing great technology and by creating a broad ecosystem.

In Barcelona VMware identified 4 top priorities:

  • modernising data centers
  • integrating public clouds
  • empowering the digital workspace
  • transforming security

And here’s what they announced:

  • the introduction of the VMware Cloud Provider Platform
  • focus on multi-cloud management with updates to VMware vRealize® Suite
  • enhancements to run containers on vSphere®
  • expansion of the VMware Mobile Security Alliance
  • a new OpenStack version of VMware vCloud® NFV™ platform

Automation first at VMworld Europe

So what does this mean from our perspective?

Business models are being disrupted and it’s a challenge to retain or create competitive differentiation and tap into new possibilities. VMware unveiled innovations that help cloud providers up their game, expand service offerings and run more efficient operations.

At Nubera, we enable businesses and IT organizations to be innovative, flexible and cost efficient through automation. Now VMware, too, seems to be putting automation front and center.

vRealize® Suite update

VMware’s update of its vRealize® Suite will make multi-cloud management simpler and more efficient. vRealize® Suite 2017 brings together the latest releases of vRealize Automation™, vRealize Operations™, vRealize Business™ for Cloud and vRealize Log Insight™ to help realize that promise.

Some highlights include:

  • Enhanced lifecycle management capabilities, simplifying upgrades & updates, and makes day 2 day operations much easier
  • Better support for Config Management Tools (finally), Containers & Microsoft Azure
  • More integration with VMware vSAN™

Containers are here to stay

The industry has been talking about containers for the past few years, but it’s only now that we’re seeing serious adoption. Portability, speed and cost efficiency are some of the reasons for containers.

Nubera has been implementing platforms such as Red Hat OpenShift & Docker Enterprise. Evidently, VMware acknowledges that containers are here to stay and will be key for cloud native apps, so they are adding some significant new features in the field of security, management and the ability to provision native Docker hosts to their vSphere Integrated Containers.

The digital workspace

In the digital workspace VMware makes their Workspace ONE™ core to a modern security architecture providing API’s for their ecosystem to integrate with. They expand Mobile Security alliance with several new partners.

OpenStack version for vCloud NFV platform

Telco providers are transforming the business with the adoption of Network Function Virtualization (NFV). VMware announced an OpenStack specific version for their vCloud NFV platform that should enable telcos to quickly and reliably deploy and upgrade OpenStack NFV and allow them to accelerate service delivery, simplify management and service security.

VMworld Barcelona in short

VMware is one of our key partners so VMworld Europe is always a highlight for us. This year was no different.

Dinners

On Tuesday VMware Benelux organized a VM Village party at the beautiful Café del Mar Club venue where it was great to talk to other Benelux delegates, customers, partners and of course my dear VMware friends.

On Wednesday Nubera invited some of our key customers and partners to an exquisite dinner at a nice gastronomic restaurant called Les Etapes. We had some delicious combinations and a fantastic wine pairing accompanied by great storytelling of our host.

I would like to thank everybody for the great talks and hope to see you back next year. Are you looking to future proof your IT infrastructure? We have created a practical guide to help you build your IT strategy.
